WHAT WE DO?

An innovating and participative approach

The HRJC provides free legal support and representation services to victims, regardless of their background, or religious or political affiliation. Through a network of qualified and trusted Nepalese human rights lawyers, it litigates cases domestically and internationally, to punish perpetrators and bring victims justice and redress. The HRJC makes a creative use of the law, exploring innovative legal avenues and strategies to promote accountability. All cases are selected and analyzed by the HRJC, before being assigned to the most adequate lawyer on its roster. A HRJC legal advisor – specialized in human rights issues – will follow the case throughout the proceedings, in synergy with the appointed lawyer and the victim.

Empowering all actors

The HRJC aims to build a culture of human rights among all judicial actors in Nepal. Therefore, it provides specialized trainings and coaching to lawyers, but also legal assistance to NGOs working on documentation and litigation.

Additionally, building agency among victims is crucial to bringing them closer to the justice system: the HRJC organizes regular empowerment workshops for victims, so that they can better understand their rights and be more involved in the proceedings.

Fostering broad cooperation

The HRJC believes that change must also happen at a structural level. It therefore lobbies domestic authorities for fairer laws and policies, with a particular focus on implementing decisions of the United Nations human rights bodies.

In order to do so, the HRJC works with a broad range of partners in Nepal and outside, such as other non-governmental organisations, diplomatic bodies, and individual experts. Together, they develop coordinated plans of action to reinforce the rule of law and fight impunity more effectively.
